SOLO TRAVEL
Traveling Solo, Not Alone
Is there somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit, but no one available to join you? Perhaps your interests or schedules differ. Perhaps life has changed, and you’re thinking about what traveling on your own might feel like.
You may be excited about the destination and still wonder about arriving alone, finding company at dinner or having someone to turn to along the way.
Those are good things to talk about. At Southlake Travel, Karen and our team begin by listening—to what you’re looking forward to, what concerns you and what would help you feel comfortable.
You don’t need to have everything figured out before we talk.
The places you want to see. The support to help you go.
When business obligations kept her husband from joining her, Karen went ahead with a ten-day Greek Isles cruise. Having traveled independently for business for years, she didn’t give going on her own a second thought.
What she wasn’t looking forward to was eating dinner alone every night.
That concern quickly faded. At the ship’s first-evening gathering for solo travelers, Karen met five terrific women and felt comfortable with them almost immediately. Before the first night was over, she had people to look forward to seeing at dinner.
Each woman had her own accommodations and her own plans for the day. They could explore their interests, enjoy time to themselves and reconnect for conversation and a shared meal.
It’s an experience Karen brings to conversations with solo travelers. Sometimes, knowing how that first evening might unfold makes it easier to picture yourself enjoying the whole journey.
Karen Understood the Travel Part. Dinner Was Another Matter.
Where Have You Always Wanted to Go?
Let’s talk about how you would like to experience it—and the balance of independence, companionship and support that would suit you.
A village you’ve seen in photographs. A museum you’ve wanted to spend hours exploring. A landscape, a culture or a journey that keeps coming to mind.
A river cruise gives you a familiar place to return to after exploring. Over shared meals and excursions, faces can become familiar and conversations can develop naturally.
With partners such as Tauck and AmaWaterways, we help you compare the ship, itinerary, daily pace and opportunities for independent time. For a sense of scale, Tauck’s ms Inspire welcomes no more than 130 guests—a setting you may find easier to get to know.

Explore With Others Who Share Your Curiosity
You don’t have to know someone before joining a guided journey. A shared interest in the destination gives you something to talk about from the beginning.
With a partner such as Tauck, a tour director oversees the itinerary and local guides bring the places you visit to life. You join others for discoveries and shared experiences, with your own room to return to at day’s end.
Follow the Interests That Make This Journey Yours
Perhaps you want more time for photography, gardens, history or food—or simply the freedom to explore at your own pace.
Working with trusted partners, including Abercrombie & Kent, we can arrange a private journey with carefully chosen accommodations, transfers and local guides where you want them. Together, we consider how much organized support and independent time would feel right.
Unpack Once. Discover Somewhere New Each Day.
Come on Your Own. Explore in the Company of Women.
If you would enjoy sharing the experience with other women, a women-only journey may be a comfortable place to begin.
Tauck’s Women’s Only Departures average 24 guests and are led by a female Tauck Director, supported by local guides. Some women join independently; others come with a sister, daughter or friend.
Shared meals and discoveries give you opportunities to get acquainted along the way. Karen, a Certified Tauck Advisor, can help you explore the itineraries, pace, accommodations and solo pricing.
Let’s Talk About What Would Help You Feel at Ease.
Knowing who will meet you and how you’ll reach your hotel or ship can make a difference. We coordinate agreed transfers and explain the meeting arrangements before you leave.
Company when you want it.
Tell us how you feel about dining and meeting new people. We ask about welcome gatherings, shared tables and other opportunities to connect, as well as options for time on your own.
A pace you can enjoy.
You may want full days of discovery or a more relaxed rhythm with fewer early starts and time to linger. We review walking demands, terrain, travel time and opportunities to rest, explaining activity and pace ratings where available.
Your own space and clear costs.
We help you compare accommodations for your exclusive use and explain single supplements. Where applicable, we look for reduced or waived supplements and rooms designed for one, comparing the total price and inclusions.
People who know you’re traveling solo.
We let the appropriate travel partners know and discuss the preferences and arrangements you want shared. Before departure, you’ll know whom to contact locally and how to reach our team if you need assistance.
A comfortable arrival.
Helping Someone You Care About Explore Solo Travel?
Perhaps someone close to you has talked about traveling again, but feels unsure about going on their own. You want them to enjoy the experience and feel comfortable, supported and welcome along the way.
We’re happy to talk with family members, friends and trusted advisors about the possibilities. When they’re ready, we can explore the ideas together—listening to what excites them, understanding any concerns, and considering the pace, accommodations and companionship that would help them enjoy the journey.
Sometimes, a thoughtful conversation is the first step toward a trip they can look forward to.
Your Next Journey Can Begin With a Conversation.
You may have a destination in mind, a few questions or simply the feeling that you’d like to travel again.
Tell us where you are in that thinking. Karen and our team will help you explore the possibilities at a pace that feels comfortable to you.
Thinking About Traveling Solo?
-
It’s understandable to wonder how you’ll fit in. The atmosphere varies by ship and tour, so we discuss dining, welcome gatherings, shared excursions and other opportunities to get acquainted before recommending a journey. Karen’s own experience helps her understand why those details matter.
-
No. We can arrange accommodations for your exclusive use. We explain the options, availability and single-occupancy pricing before you book.
-
Not necessarily. Many cruise and tour fares assume two people sharing accommodations, so occupying a room alone may involve a single supplement. The amount varies. Some providers reduce or waive supplements on selected departures, and some ships offer rooms designed for one. We help you compare the total cost and what is included.
-
Yes. Tauck offers women-only departures that welcome individual travelers alongside women traveling together. These small-group journeys are led by a female Tauck Director. We can explain the itinerary, accommodations, pace and pricing.
-
Tell us what an enjoyable day looks like to you. We consider both physical activity and the overall schedule: walking distances, stairs, uneven ground, early departures, hotel changes and time to rest. Supplier rating scales differ, so we help explain what they mean in practice.
-
Many journeys include free time or optional activities, although flexibility varies. We review the itinerary together so you understand where you have choices and how much time is scheduled with the group.
-
Of course. You’re welcome to begin with questions about the possibilities and how we work. As plans develop, we include the traveler and the people they would like involved. If you are acting as a guardian or authorized representative, please mention that when we speak.
-
Before departure, we explain the relevant contacts. Your tour director, ship’s staff or local representative may be the first person to approach for immediate assistance. Karen and our team can also help address changes and coordinate with travel partners.
