Founder’s Story

KAREN DAWSON

Managing Director - Southlake Travel

Karen Dawson did not grow up traveling the world.

She grew up on a dairy farm.

When she graduated from college, career paths felt limited. Teaching and nursing were the most common starting points. Instead, Karen chose something less conventional — she enrolled in travel school, despite having traveled very little herself.

That decision quietly shaped the course of her life.

From the Farm to the Financial District

Karen’s early career brought her to Boston’s financial district, where she managed a travel agency serving financial executives, vice presidents, senior leadership, and C-level decision makers. She personally handled complex travel for senior executives, including the founder and CEO of a major global investment firm.

Her work required discretion, precision, and the ability to anticipate needs long before they were spoken.

During this time, she was recruited by a client to serve as Director of Corporate Travel and Meetings for a major investment firm. There, she oversaw corporate travel strategy and meeting logistics from the executive side of the table — gaining firsthand insight into how travel decisions affect productivity, cost management, and accountability at the highest levels.

Understanding the Industry from the Inside Out

Karen later served as a Regional Manager overseeing more than 60 franchise travel agencies across the Northeast and Midwest. Her territory stretched from Maine through New England and New York, across Pennsylvania, and into Michigan.

She advised agency owners on staffing, sales, operations, financial management, and performance accountability — making nearly 180 site visits annually.

She saw how agencies succeed.
And she saw how they fail.

A subsequent role in product management deepened her operational perspective even further. When reviewing a new software system for travel agencies, Karen immediately recognized that a reporting function critical to agency survival had been delayed to a later phase.

Her response was direct: without that function in place from the beginning, there would be no second phase.

She understood what developers did not — how agencies actually operate.

That perspective continues to shape her work today.

Curated Access & Cultural Depth

Over the past two decades, Karen has planned and escorted journeys across Europe — including England, Scotland, and Italy — as well as Napa Valley and destinations throughout the United States.

Her hosted programs have included intimate cultural journeys developed in collaboration with a former head chef at Buckingham Palace. These experiences offered travelers rare insight into British culinary and royal traditions, including a privately arranged eight-course dining experience aboard the former royal yacht, HMY Britannia.

These were not simply sightseeing trips. They were thoughtfully curated experiences shaped by story, heritage, and meaningful access.

The Beginning of Southlake Travel

After years in corporate leadership and national oversight roles, Karen returned to what mattered most — the traveler.

The turning point came unexpectedly at a social gathering in Southlake, when a country club member approached her in quiet panic over honeymoon plans involving the Bahamas and onward travel to Tahiti.

Karen calmly stepped in, guided the couple through their plans, managed the details, and restored confidence.

She realized then that her greatest impact would not be overseeing agencies or systems — but guiding individuals and families.

Southlake Travel was built from that moment.

A Different Kind of Travel Advisor

Southlake and its surrounding communities are home to talented travel professionals. Karen’s path into the industry, however, was shaped by operational leadership, executive responsibility, and firsthand experience across nearly every layer of travel management.

She understands travel not only from the traveler’s point of view, but from the structural, financial, and operational side as well.

Today, that depth translates into something her clients value deeply:

Measured guidance.
Thoughtful planning.
And quiet confidence when details matter most.

Karen remains understated about her background.

But the experience behind each recommendation is anything but.

While Karen provides the strategic vision and senior counsel for Southlake Travel, she is supported by a coordinated team of advisors and strategists who bring each journey to life. Behind every seamless departure is a collaborative effort rooted in thoughtful planning, global perspective, and disciplined execution.

We work together to ensure your travel is not only enriching but handled with the utmost care.
